Why did the due date on my book change? I thought I had the whole semester to read it!
Answer
Sorry about that! It looks like your loan was probably recalled.
This happens when one of our regular circulating books is requested while it's on loan to someone else. We see this happen most often with books where we have one copy on reserve and another copy circulating in the stacks, because patrons want to borrow the book they need for a class for the whole semester instead of just a few hours. Rightfully so!
While your loan period may have been shortened by quite a bit, we'd suggest...
- you check the catalog again to see if there's a copy marked "course reserve" in the record. If so, that means the library has a copy of the book available for in-library use for up to four hours at a time. Come on in and pick up right where you left off!
- We may also carry an eBook of the title through one of our various eBook vendors! Take another look at the record and if there's a copy under the "View Online" heading.
- Or, see if it's carried by another library in the wider Columbia University Library ecosystem. They've got a pretty big reach, so they just might!
- Or, simply go ahead and request the book right back and we'll recall it again. You should get it back in 10 days.
Regardless of what you end up doing to re-access the book, make sure that you return the copy loaned to you within 10 days of receiving notice about it. Here's what the notice will look like:

Thanks again for borrowing from us, and we hope that you do again, soon!
